Alike in virtue of her marvellous beauty, her rare
intellectual gifts, her fervid eloquence, her fearless devotion and her
glorious martyrdom, she stands forth incomparable and immortal amidst her
countrywomen. (E.G. Browne)
Tahirih
is perhaps the most controversial woman in Iranian
history. A poet, an activist, a scholar, a teacher, a mystic, and finally a
martyr, this woman stunned her nation in the middle of the nineteenth century
and became a legend... (Publishers Note)
This latest book on the only female Letter of the Living book contains a
number of articles about Táhirih and her life and how the world
responded to it, from a range of authors (Eastern and Western, Christian,
Muslim and Baháí, nineteenth- and twentieth-century) with
others that deal with related matters. General readers will find it somewhat
uneven but there is much in it of historical importance and of genuine
interest.
