The Resting-Place of George Townshend

In its mailings to the community about what we might do to mark the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Passing of George Townshend the Bahá'í Council has suggested the Friends may wish to visit his grave and offer prayers. The grave is in the churchyard at Enniskerry, south of Dublin and near Powerscourt. A map has been sent to all NI communities for the benefit oftravellers from the North. If you wish a copy of the map to Enniskerry churchyard please contact the Bahá'í Council.

Follow the path round to the front of the Church. Stand with your back to the church. Opposite you and to your left of the front door of the church you will see a main path through the cemetery which is entered under a large overhanging yew tree. Walk to the far end of this path. The resting place of George Townshend is the last of the old graves on the right hand side of this path under a large tree The head-stone is unmistakable as it is in the form of an open book.

The Secretary of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the Republic advises: “If Local Spiritual Assemblies are making arrangements for visits to the grave, they should be aware that it is in a working Church of Ireland graveyard, and we have always endeavoured to be discreet with respect to the numbers going to the grave at any one time and the times of the visits.”

NOTE: The National Spiritual Assembly of the Republic of Ireland is holding a commemoration at the Summerhill House Hotel, near the graveyard, on Sunday 1 April. This will include visits to the graveside. Details have been sent to community secretaries and are also available from the Bahá'í Council. .
