MEMORIAL FOR GRACE PRITCHARD MBE (1916-2008)

Sunday 5 April 2009

Shalom Community Resource Centre,
12 Cliftonville Road,
Belfast .
(Opposite Belfast Royal Academy)

3 pm

Grace Pritchard MBE was born in 1916 in Killybegs, Co. Donegal, where her father Canon Flemming, was the local Church of Ireland Rector. In 1954, she met Jane Villiers-Stuart whose children attended the school. It was Jane who later invited her to a Bahá’í meeting and introduced her to Lady Kathleen Hornell, and Grace became a Baha'i in 1959. A few months later she pioneered to Bangor, Co. Down, to help form the first LSA there. Through Grace, a number of others heard about the Faith and later became Bahá’ís. Among these were Peggy Harrison-her friend from College days, Christina Pasquali (nee Bailie) and Greta Galbraith. In 1968, Grace was invited to become Principal of the biggest Nursery School in N. Ireland, which was situated on the New Lodge Road. When the 'troubles' began in 1969, she found that the school was caught in the crossfire. On some occasions she actually brought the children and parents from the school to stay at her home in Bangor-her son recalled once having twenty-three people in the house! It was such a life of dedication that eventually saw her awarded with an MBE- one of the few Bahá’í in the British Isles ever to receive this honour. Apart from her Bahá’í activities, she was also dedicated to caring for her husband Colin, who had been shell-shocked in World War Two. She finally passed away in March 2008, just a few months after her husband.
